Special Project February 2012

SPECIAL PROJECT
Aiding & Assisting Female Veterans
A report of the “Silent Auction”, held at the Winter C of A in Raleigh, will be given next month.
I want to speak a little bit on Homeless Female Veterans. Women make up a growing number
of homeless veterans. The numbers have increased significantly over the past few years to
nearly 1,700 this past year. These numbers will continue to rise as service members return
from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
Female veterans have much of the same stresses as male veterans to include: Brain injuries,
PTSD, and many women also contend with sexual trauma, domestic abuse and pregnancy all
the while trying to raise children alone. Two-thirds of the homeless female veterans are
between 40 and 59 years old.
Many actions are necessary to ensure homeless veterans get the housing and services they
need. Ladies, we can help be a small part of the solution. Your President has asked that we try
to provide some assistance through grants to female veterans in need or of assistance. Oh, I
understand we can’t help them all but even if we can help a select few that is more than we
were doing. The grants depend on us though. We will again ask that you send anything you
can either you personally or by a vote on your auxiliary floor to give what you can to get this
program kicked off. We will again hold another “Silent Auction”, at the State Convention.
Hopefully, with all of your help we can present Madam President, Barbara with enough to set
up the grant program to start giving back to our female veterans who have more than helped
us.
Please make sure when making donations that you send them to the State Treasurer, Jeanne
Gilbert and earmark the check, Special Project. I also need your reports. You can e-mail them
to me or call me. You can also go to the reporting website or have your District President enter
them. The reporting site is: http://lanc.vfwportal.net. You can also access the reporting from
the new Ladies Auxiliary website: www.myvfwaux.org/ncladies. It is listed under tools. We want to
make sure that everyone that has donated or done a project gets credit for their auxiliary.
Special awards will be given out at the Convention. I will let you know of those in the next
mailing.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for the donations of money and items to the Silent Auction,
and for all the time, effort and love that you put into this project. It won’t and can’t happen
without YOU!
